With the release of Bayonetta 2, the old sexual objectification vs empowerment debate rises like the phoenix. Does her long legs, whacked out proportions, and sexual innuendos make her an object specifically designed fro thousands to jerk off to? Or is she someone who clearly owns her body and sexuality and uses it to her advantage? Probably both.
The line between sexual objectification and sexual empowerment can be argued but it really comes down to whether or the character own their own body or not. Some character wear really revealing outfits, and I think that's okay, to some degree. A few months ago I came up with a list of questions that every designer should ask themselves when developing a character. These are questions and not rules because there are good character who do break these.
1. Do they own their own body/sexuality?
2. Are they the type of person who would wear revealing outfits
on their own accord?
3. Do they look comfortable in the outfit?
4. Is the outfit practical?
5. Would the outfit look really ridiculous
outside of a sexual environment?
6. If it's a completely seperate culture, does everyone
else where similar outfits?
7. Does it make sense within the context of
the narrative and setting?
